Immigration from the third world to Sweden has led to massive social and economic problems. However, the Swedish elites compactly believe in the ideology of multiculturalism. This is true both of the left and of the right.
Their main strategy is to deny objective reality. If our lying eyes tell us that immigrants disproportionally commit crime, live off government benefits and cause negative social externalities, our eyes and our statistics must be wrong. First, anyone who points out data about the effects of immigration is silenced using the effective ad hominem accusation of racism.
Once everyone who is not a multi-culturalist is out of the way and the intellectual level of the debate is lowered to satisfactory levels, the elites are free to exaggerate the benefits, reject or underplay the problems, and make up fantasies about what would happen without immigration. So for example they have claimed that without immigration from the third world Sweden would not have olive oil in the stores or fast food. Or that immigrants, who even when they are younger than Swedes are a net burden on the welfare state, and who like everyone else age and eventually collect pensions, will somehow magically save the pension system.
There is however a second strategy, that I want to write about today. This is when problems with immigration are acknowledged, but blamed on Sweden. Under the dominant multi-culturalist ideology immigration is axiomatically good, so any problems must be due to external factors.
Each side self-servingly attributes the problems of immigration to what they don’t like about the Swedish system.
The left therefore claims that the explanation of why half of non-western immigrants don’t work is racism by capitalist firms. The reason immigrants are 6 times as likely to go to jail for committing crime is discrimination in the legal system, and the lack of funding for public services.
The right conversly claims that problems associated with immigration are entirely due to the welfare state.
Usually we rely on some sort of efficiency in the marketplace for ideas through competition. The left will point out the weak arguments of the right, and vice versa. The result is of course not perfect, but at least you don’t get away with anything. But when it comes to immigration the elites to the left and right in Sweden have formed an intellectual cartel.
The respective arguments in favor of continued mass immigration are *never* questioned by either side. So for example when currently the government and academia are lying to the public and claiming that immigration has not contributed to more incidents of rape - even though according to official statistics half of all rapes are committed by immigrants - the law-and-order right is silent.
The secondary debate where each side blames the problems of third world immigration to the policies of the other side (because it would be unthinkable that the problem was immigration itself) is a little less taboo, but even here the elites tread carefully.
Which brings me to the subject of this post. The Center party (the right of center rural, small town party) has a think tank managed by a bright, energetic guy called Martin Ã…dahl.
They are releasing a new book called “Successful immigration”, claiming that in opposite to common perceptions, research shows that immigration to Sweden is beneficial for growth and job creation.
The book release emphasizes the success story of Somali immigrants in Minnesota by Benny Carlson.
Why do Swedes care so much about Somali immigrants in Minnesota, American readers might ask themselves?
It is very simple. Somali immigrants in Sweden are one of the most problematic groups. Only about 20% work, the rest living on welfare. Since according to multi-culturalists it is not logically possible that immigration from Somalia is not beneficial for Sweden, we must assume Swedes or the Swedish system is to blame.
As we noted the right blames this on the welfare state. They have thus invented the story that Somalia immigrants in free-market Minnesota are a magnificently successful group, largely based on anecdotal evidence. If we could only copy the policies of Minnesota, they would thrive also in Sweden.
Can we trust the research presented by this book? What does the data tell us?
I downloaded US Census American Community Survey 2006-2008 (before the crisis), which allows us to directly investigate Somali immigrants in Minnesota.
The average income of the working age adults in Minnesota is $38.000.
The average income of working age Somali immigrants in Minnesota is $13.800, or about one third(!). As a comparison, one third of the average American income is Mexico.
More than half of Somali immigrants in Minnesota are below the poverty line.
Only one half of Somali immigrants in Minnesota work.
Those who work earn $21.000 per year, compared to $46.000 for Minnesotans on average.
The median income of Somalis that work is $12000 per year, or about 9000 Swedish kronor per month (using 9 kronor to a dollar as a PPP-adjusted conversion rate).
The conclusion that this data tells us is that Somali immigration to Minnesota has been a complete disaster from the perspective of Minnesota.
A group that earn one third of average income cannot possibly be a net contributor to the public sector (in the U.S those with low income pay virtually no taxes, yet consume public services).
A group that earns one third of average income and where half live in poverty is not a success story for other countries to be inspired by.
One consolation is that we find that 51% of Somalis in Minnesota work, compared to about 20% in Sweden. Is that not at least a partial success story?
Minnesota in 2008 has very little labor regulations, low taxes, and much less generous public services than Sweden (although contrary to public perception they do still have some welfare and public services). It is more of a brutal sink-or-swim climate for immigrants than Sweden will ever be in my lifetime.
Yet, half of Somalis don’t work.
Moreover, those who do work earn very little, because they have low productivity.
If we import the Minnesota “success-story” to Sweden, we will get more Somali immigrants to work. But half of them would earn 9000 Swedish kronor per month or less, income levels that Swedes consider abject poverty. Swedes simply do not want a segregated, low-wage labour market.
The entire purpose of the Swedish social experiment is that Swedes are inequality averse, and do not want to live in a society where unskilled workers earn third world wages.
Nor do Swedes enjoy social problems, and are satisfied if over 50% of a community lives in poverty (compared to less than 7% of Swedes).
When a group with this dismal performance is cheerfully presented to the Swedish public as a “success-story” that we should emulate, we know that the intellectual level of the Swedish right has sunk very low.

This is convincing criticism of them as an economic success story. However, many people believe that taking refugees is a moral obligation. In that case, it is a lot better that 50% of them work than 20%. You'd really need to know income net of transfers to know both the total cost and the level of poverty they experience. But I'm pretty sure that the vast majority of American residing Somalis prefer to live in America in abject poverty than to live in Somalia.
ReplyDeleteI just did a quick look for the Swedish income distribution and found "Income distribution in Sweden" by Joakim Palme in The Japanese Journal of Social Security Policy, Vol.5, No.1 (June 2006)
http://www.ipss.go.jp/webj-ad/WebJournal.files/SocialSecurity/2006/jun/palme.pdf
I suggests (page 22 table 2) that 9000 Krona a month would be almost the 25% of national income. In which case that doesn't seem terrible. Not excellent, but if 25% of Swedish workers are earning less, then it isn't exactly intollerable.
Interesting, Tino! Do you have the data to make a comparison with another immigrant group in Minnesota? What is the average income in, for example, the mexican group?
ReplyDeleteOneEyed:
ReplyDeleteThe Palme figures are for all adults. They include people over 65, and they include people who do not work.
The 9000 kr figure is for only those in working age (excluding the retired) and only those who work.
If we use Palmes definition and look at every Somali immigrant over 18 regardless if they work, the median income is 6000 kr per month. That would put the median Somali immigrant below the 5th percentile in Sweden.
The 10th percentile for full time wages in Sweden in 2008 was 18.600 kr per month (remember though that he Somali figures include part time workers).
No one denied that the Somalis are better off in Minnesota than Mogadishu. The claim in this book is that Somalis are an economically successful group in Minnesota, that Somalis in Sweden would be as “successful” as those in Minnesota if we adopted American policies, and that that Minnesota and potentially Sweden economically benefits from Somali immigration.
Per the average income of Mexican immigrants 16-64 in Minnesota is $17.000. 67% worked.
Sadly I see your point made everyday. I am a Vermonter living in Uppsala and have a hard time believing the burka clad scowling ladies I see loitering about town add much to society. It is so bizarre to see these two absolutely opposite cultures (the most modern of the west and most benighted of the east) in the same time and place. It is like Carl Sagan and Chingis Khan sharing an apartment.
ReplyDeleteI find it especially frustrating as there are plenty of skilled people who would gladly move here. (I have never heard of a Chinese engineer causing trouble.) But most Swedes cannot accept that there is a trade off made when bringing in people with a medieval mentality into a post modern society. All cultures are equal, all people are the same. Many, especially leftwingers, reject the notion that Swedish society is special, fragile, and worth preserving. (not that I think Sweden is under even medium term threat)
It is not popular to point out, but empirically irrefutable fact that, big groups of unskilled muslims don't assimilate. Worse, they are parasitic. Just ask the police in Brussels or Paris which neighborhoods they are afraid to patrol. It aint the Vietnamese ones. Better yet, talk to a Christian in Cairo, that's the long run risk.
Tino,
ReplyDeleteWith no welfare state, immigrants could only survive in Sweden (or elsewhere) through work that fulfills some demand in the economy (save charity). Saying that these immigrants will not earn a lot or are not as productive as the native population is not an argument against immigration. If there was no demand for the work they were providing they would not be hired and with no welfare they would presumably leave.
I don't really see why you seem to think that "The Right" is wrong on this one. With no welfare state, immigration is economically beneficial. Here is Friedman's view on the matter: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3eyJIbSgdSE
Mehmet:
ReplyDelete1. When the Swedish right complains about the “welfare state”, they are referring to public expenditure over a certain limit. Very few of them want to abolish basic services such as free primary education and emergency health care for the children of the poor, roads, law and order etc. Unskilled immigrants take advantage of these services without paying their full share.
2. Even in an anarcho-capitalist democracy with 0% government, unskilled immigrants still increase crime, lower property prices and cause negative social externalities. Not all transactions go through the market.
3. An anarcho-capitalist democracy with unskilled immigration is an impossibility, since poor immigrants overwhelmingly (and rationally) support the left and would immediately vote themselves benefits, just as they do today. Do you want to abolish their right to vote?
There's a risk that discussions about immigration focus solely on economy. I'm very much for an efficient, growing economy, but quality of life is obviously not only about that. Tino has mentioned somewhere high IQ Indians as desirable, good-for-the-economy immigrants. Now, I think I (I'm Swedish) would like it better living among average IQ Swedes than among high IQ Indians, even if I'd be a bit poorer for it. That's not "hate," just a matter of personal preference.
ReplyDeleteGood point Bert.
ReplyDeletePart of the charm of traveling in East Asia is the relative ethnic homogeneity of the societies. There are definitely trade offs between multiethnic and singleethnic systems (limiting the comparison to relatively stable multiethnic countires say U.S. vs Japan) I don't know which is "better" but it is naive to think that homogeneity is not without its charms.
I certainly feel western European countries are giving something special up with the population transformation they are undertaking. Somehow turning France from a uniformly "european" country(still wide diversity physical traits unlike say among Swedes or Greeks), into an Islamic Republic with fancy coffee is a sort of slow motion genocide of one of humanity's great civilizations. The living museum aspect of a country is certainly a draw for tourism too. Oh well, the die is already cast.
The Hmong in Minnesota might be a better comparison: They're refugees that were settled in the state rather than immigrants who found their way in by their own means, for starters.
ReplyDeleteThen again, the comparison might make the Somali position look even worse: They have 71.5% labor force participation for 16+ year olds, an average income of $30,090 and only about 9.7% of the population is below the poverty line in the 2006-2008 Census data.
That could be considered a success story. It might be interesting to look into why Somalis and Hmong perform so differently in the same environment.
I have an aunt who works for the Minnesota welfare department. The Somalis are completely ungrateful for the benefits they receive and see no reason to work. They are polygamists who have large families which they can support because the taxpayers foot the bill. She has also said that the Hmong form pretty serious gangs, but people don't mind them so much since they are easier to live with than the gangs they displace.
ReplyDeleteHere's a forum where people are discussing Somalis in Minneapolis.
ReplyDeleteI have lived in Minnesota all my life and we now have over 50,000 Somalis in the Minneapolis-St Paul area. I found your website when searching for answers as to how and why they got here. First I should explain I am very liberal, but this influx of people who are anti-American and insular is disturbing.
ReplyDeleteThe offspring of the Hmong immigrants have become much more assimilated. We owed them a debt from the terrible Viet Nam era. Many are in agriculture here and are loyal citizens.
It is true that the Somalis are ungrateful and seem to be totally antagonistic to our Judeo-Christian values. They expect America to change to their medieval lifestyle. We had taxi drivers refusing to haul passengers carrying a bottle of wine or traveling with a service dog; check-out clerks refuse to ring up pork products and have to get a supervisor; the Hennepin County Medical Center's obstetric staff changed to almost all females to accommodate Muslim objections to having their wives treated by male doctors.
Young Minneapolis Somali men were spirited out of the country to train in terroist camps in Somalia and now we worry about "home-grown" terrorists. The FBI is building a large new field office in a local suburb; no doubt to monitor these new threats.
They've totally taken over the taxi business. I got tired of rude drivers with an attitude, so now I take public transportation to and from our airport.
Any company that doesn't allow for all the prayer breaks gets sued. They bring lawyers to view apartments and threaten suits if a landlord doesn't want to rent to them. Tiny little girls are encumbered in head wraps. They want drivers' licenses but some women won't remove their full burka for the official photo. How can a proper I.D. show two eyes with a face fully wrapped?
There have been serious crimes, even murder, and then the courts find out the perps have false names, false I.D.'s and a murky history as to how they got here.
I know college instructors and people with Master's Degrees who are native British and they cannot live here, but instead we bring people with zero English, no skills, no education to further strain our limited resources in a time of a terrible economy.
This is a State that was primarily of German and Scandanavian heritage. We had a long tradition of prairie values of a strong work ethic, civic duty, and appreciation of the arts and environment. We now have people who seem to expect us to change our progressive views because there are here.

ReplyDeleteIts quite simple really - IQ.
There are group differences in IQ. I know I know..thats "racist" and all. But its the truth.
Sadly most social "scientists" of today are ignorant of the most robust variable in all of social science - IQ, and hence they spout gibberish and nonsense.
Well, I am going to join this discussion. Just wanted to say That I would like to thank for all the information and for sharing your point of view on this case.
ReplyDeleteBest Regards

OK.. Let me jump in as well..
ReplyDeleteFirst... blue stocking, you may claim to be liberal but you seem to be very far from it is core believe: Liberalism = believe of individual liberty and equal rights. As you put it, how somali women dress is a big issue for you.. By the way VERY small number of them dress with the "full burka". Small number of taxi drivers made an issue alcohol transportation. It is unfortunate that you chose to generalize these misfortune incidents to ALL Somalis indiscriminately.
Tino, I must admit you have some convincing data in your argument. I would like to dig deeper and see these numbers for myself. Good post tho.
One factoid... The first Somali-born, Somali-American elected to public office in Minnesota. There are multitude of Somalis who are doctors, engineers, lawyers, businessmen that are well assimilated into the American main-stream..
I must also highlight the fact that there are a multitude of Americans of European decent who appreciate their Somali colleagues unlike the very few who propagate hateful stereotypes.
It is unfortunate that the topic here, which I think is against the book called “Successful immigration”, to be high-jacked and made it to be Somali-bashing topic.

Third trial for upload..
ReplyDelete==Tino,
I have looked at he data set you have mentioned. I couldn't see any data specific to Somalis. I see East African data which includes Ethiopians, Kenyans, Eritreans and Somalis. That data does not reflect the data you have here. Could you please point me to the actual data from which you are drawing conclusions??
You don't get the point. Massive 3rd world immigration was caused not by economical reasons and OF COURSE not just to "help starving asylum seekers". LOL
ReplyDeleteThe main reason was to conduct a SOCIAL EXPERIMENT: what will happen if "natives" are replaced with 3rd world aliens. Another reason was to "split" and fragment the society to create ever-going tensions to prevent the society to act as a "whole".
Why? Because governments especially in the West HATE their people and consider them as resources that can be thrown away or increased.
Simple.
OneEyed--
ReplyDeleteHowever, many people believe that taking refugees is a moral obligation.
I don't. particularly when they're largely lying economic refugees that want to live off rich country welfare, and if they do work, are incredibly unproductive.
bluestocking--
ReplyDeleteWe now have people who seem to expect us to change our progressive views because there are here.
Your community's excessively progressive views are WHY they are there.
People need to stop lying to themselves about ethnic differences, which are very real and consequential sometimes.
We shouldn't on the other hand exaggerate differences. Rather be willing to see, learn and tell the truth.
Let me tell you about somolians in Rochester, Minnesota.
ReplyDeleteBut first, please Google "Female Genital Circumcision" or Somali religious rites.
Then when you get up off the floor.......after you stop puking.........
Then Google.......
muslims somoli's rape white girls for 2 hours.......
Or somoli pirates........
Or somoli terrorists training and recruiting in Minnesota.........
Or, more simple yet........
Just google... I hate somolians ....
Or type somoli trouble in (enter any city or country name), especially Sweden, France, Denmark, Scotland, England.
Also Google Somali's invade and bankrupt social services in ..... (enter any city or country name....
Then come back here to read more. Knowledge about primitive savages is just a couple clicks on the keyboard.
somolians are primitive savages..........Google the truth...it will set you free.
Wonderful blog & good post. Its really helpful for me, awaiting for more new post. Keep Blogging!
ReplyDeleteImmigration to Australia
Ahmed...if I Google, Muslims rape white girl for 2 hours in (enter any city or country name)........
ReplyDeleteWhich article will be about you?
Somalia's such a wonderful country, with such civilized, advanced people in it.....why aren't you in Somalia?
Of course I shouldn't pick on Somalia.....any Black/Brown country is a crap hole, and the Black/Brown population are all invading the White countries for welfare and to live with decent humans.
"When a group with this dismal performance is cheerfully presented to the Swedish public as a “success-story”..."
ReplyDeleteIt isn't.
This is a sad and ignorant discussion that has clearly deviated from the intended purpose of the original article. It deeply distrurbs me to see such generalizations made about an entire culture.
ReplyDeleteAnd this directed to alicia specifically; you're comments here are ridiculously out of place and a true testament to your ignorance of world cultures. Your comments are blatently racist and I emplore you to refrain from making other Rochester natives, like myself, appear to be as simple-minded as yourself.
Hello, I came upon this blog while doing some quick research on Somali immigrant history because I will be conducting interviews with a Somali group of women to improve literacy programs geared Somalians.
ReplyDeleteI'm going to admit that I have not studied economics, but if we're going to discuss the success of Somali immigrants, I think it's important to review the background of Somalians and put this all into better context rather than just looking at cold numbers.
My quick Google research tells me that Somali immigrants have come to Minnesota to escape the war, and have come to Minnesota in particular because there is a high number of jobs that do not require English proficiency.
Somalians do not read or write--all of their information is passed on orally, and this is likely what makes it difficult for them to contribute significantly to the economy. That is why a large number of them are taxi drivers because anyone with a GPS and driving skills can become a driver. The fact that they can only take on these low-skill jobs explains why their income is low. Furthermore, Somalian adults with little to no knowledge of America/Sweden or the language have to start from ground zero, even they were medical practitioners or professors in their country. Somali students who are not of age to have a job undertake American education and struggle to adapt with written language. I believe that they are doing their best to adapt; the civic engagement project that I am undertaking is an example of this progress. My colleagues that have worked with them have found them to be hardworking and humble people. In time, through compromises and understanding between both cultures, I think that the Somali will be able to contribute more to the economy, if that is the point we are discussing.
That aside, I'm terribly disgusted by the racism that I see here. Maybe there have been individual instances of rape, but I would urge for people to do their best not to extrapolate this frustration towards ethnic or racial groups as a whole; how are you going to explain instances of American soldiers raping Japanese in Okinawa today...there are a plethora of examples like this and it is beside the topic. All of that is immature and unjust. Think about where they are coming from, and have a sense of humanity. Put yourself in their situation, and think harder before you speak in such a racist manner, all of you.
I know that it's already 2012, but I just had to put a word in.
Thanks.
I must admit you have some convincing intelligence in your argument Best Quality Printing Company . I would like to dig deeper and see these numbers for myself.
ReplyDeleteI must also highlight the reality that there are a mass of Americans of European decent who appreciate residential painting contractors ma their Somali colleagues unlike the very few who propagate hateful stereotypes.
It is unfortunate that the topic here, which I pondering is against immigration lawyer toronto the publication called “Successful immigration”, to be high-jacked and made it to be Somali-bashing topic.
